Drinking Water Can be Harmful For Baby

Infants under 6 months of age should never be given water to drink, so that reminded by scientists from the John Hopkins children's center in Baltimore to parents. By consuming too much water can increase the dangerous conditions in infants, or the so-called water intoxication.

Although very small babies, they have a thirst reflex or a stimulant to drink. When they feel thirsty and wanted a drink, liquid is required to drink breastmilk or formula. Thus described by Dr. Jennifer Anders, an expert on children of emergency John Hopkins children's center.

Because the immature infant kidneys, by giving them lots of water will cause the body to remove them due to excess fluid sodium. Losing sodium can affect brain activity, so early symptoms of water intoxication is irritability (and whining), drowsiness and other mental changes. Other symptoms that can arise is the decrease of body temperature, edema, or swelling around the face and seizures.

Early symptoms that appear are sometimes less obvious, so the new parents notice when their baby seizures. However, with rapid treatment, symptoms of seizures may not be displayed.
Water as a beverage should not be given for the 6-month-old baby down. Parents also should avoid giving formula with excessive dilution (over-dilution), or drinks that contain electrolytes child.

For some cases, perhaps just by giving a small amount of water, such as a state of constipation (hard BAB) and in hot weather, but parents should be consulted in advance with child specialists, and only allowed to give 1-2 ounces of water at every gift.

If parents find their babies experiencing water intoxication, or when their baby comes seizures, they should get medical attention.
